The inspiration for this one came from a floral picture in an old book which had been reproduced by engraving the image into a metal plate for printing. I loved the monochromatic feel. The flower design itself is rather Middle Eastern. The interior of the circle is faceted like a jewel, probably suggested by the many construction lines I make when I design one of these circular works.
The circle itself came very easy... it is the background with which I have been struggling with. The design is Islamic and I have wanted to use it in a painting for years! This one seemed right for it. However, the lesson I have learnt is to complete the construction of the background before I paint the circle, as it is very difficult to be accurate later!
So I have compromised from my original vision... which is possibly better as I feel the eye can now rest from the busy central design. I have also changed the colour of the background several times until it 'sings'! I always say art is about faith... the faith to carry on
until it comes right.
After I have retouched all the line work, I will apply silver leaf to parts of the circle and then I will be finished!! :)
