A Painting in Production

There's no doubt that I enjoy working in three dimensions, but I am chiefly a painter. Sculpting for me is a break from my 'real' art which is painting! This one illustrated here in production is one that I have been battling with for a while now, and I want to get it finished so I can start on the next one.

The inspiration for this one came from a floral picture in an old book which had been reproduced by engraving the image into a metal plate for printing. I loved the monochromatic feel. The flower design itself is rather Middle Eastern. The interior of the circle is faceted like a jewel, probably suggested by the many construction lines I make when I design one of these circular works.

The circle itself came very easy... it is the background with which I have been struggling with. The design is Islamic and I have wanted to use it in a painting for years! This one seemed right for it. However, the lesson I have learnt is to complete the construction of the background before I paint the circle, as it is very difficult to be accurate later!

So I have compromised from my original vision... which is possibly better as I feel the eye can now rest from the busy central design. I have also changed the colour of the background several times until it 'sings'! I always say art is about faith... the faith to carry on
 until it comes right.

After I have retouched all the line work, I will apply silver leaf to parts of the circle and then I will be finished!! :)

Back to the Studio..

Life has been a bit busy lately... friends and work... but I have still managed to progress a little bit more on Horatio Crow!
I had some issues with weighting him so he was balanced correctly but think I have managed it now! Sometimes I take him with me and visit two artist friends of mine and we have a day together. We all work on different things but the creative energy and mutual support is fantastic!
Hopefully I will have more to show you soon :)
